When the warm seasons arrive, the Dandenong Ranges transform into one of Melbourne’s most magical backdrops for photography. For many of my clients, the moment they step into these lush gardens, they instantly feel connected to nature and ready to create something special.
Recently, I photographed Steph, Brendan and their gorgeous little boy Sebastian for their maternity session, and their experience is the perfect example of why the Dandenong Ranges are such a dream location. Steph chose a stunning copper-coloured gown from our studio wardrobe, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect match for her hair and complexion. Against the greenery and soft floral tones of the gardens, her dress created a warm, elegant contrast that photographed beautifully.
One of the biggest advantages of shooting in the Dandenong Ranges is the peacefulness—especially if you visit during the week. When we arrived, the gardens were almost completely deserted. It felt like we had the entire landscape to ourselves, giving the Henderson family plenty of space to relax, play with Sebastian, and enjoy the moment without distraction. The absence of crowds also meant that every backdrop was available to us, from majestic tree-lined pathways to open lawns and quiet corners rich with colour.
Some of our favourite images were taken near the vibrant orange clivia flowers, which were in full bloom and added a burst of natural brightness to the portraits. The clivias created a warm, lush frame around the family that perfectly complemented Steph’s gown. We also wandered down to the small lake—a hidden gem complete with charming little bridges and an adorable boat house. The reflections on the water, combined with the soft summer light, gave their portraits a dreamy, storybook quality.
